Frequently Asked Questions
What's with the ads on this site?
The advertising money is used to pay for web storage space and hosting. No one is paid for doing any work on the site. Instead of using Google ads like most sites, the ads are from record labels that actually release punk and hardcore music.
What are the details for advertising?
For more information, click here.
Do you take donations?
Sure! You can donate 90 seconds of your time by sending an email to your favorite punk or hardcore label and tell them to advertise on this site. You can also support this site by picking up some music from the labels that advertise here.
Which labels currently help support this site?
Beer City Records
Frontier Records
Tasty Treat Records
Why do the pages look different now?
The site was updated, so it's more reader friendly with flexible fonts and standard colors. When I started this site years ago, I didn't know how to code the pages, so that's been fixed too.
Does this site take a lot of time?
Yes. It also took a long time for these zines to get printed when they were originally released too. Bloggers have it easy.
Is it boring to scan zines?
Not if I listen to music while scanning.
Is punk dead?
Let's hope not.
Are zines dead?
Nope, zines are still being printed.
Are you involved in MRR?
Nope, I've never met any of them. I'm not sure why I used to get so many emails about MRR and Tim Yo. Maybe the "no one is paid for any work" part of the site reminds people of MRR. I'm not associated with any of the other zines in the archive either.
How many people work on this site?
Usually one person, but Bob helps scan when he gets time.
Why do you do this?
The most probable answer is obsessive compulsive disorder. I could probably write an essay for this question, but I'll keep it short. If I made a "Top 500 Records of All Time" list, it would probably consist of 450 records that have been talked about and reviewed in these zines. This site is my way of giving something back. It's as simple as that.
How do you scan the zines to make them searchable?
Optical Character Recognition (OCR) allows the text to be searched. Some scanner programs have that feature.
Do you know [fill in a name here]? I want to get in contact.
Try Google. I grew up in the middle of nowhere, and I don't have the schmoozing skills to gain scenester status from a distance.
Where can I buy old zines?
You can pick them up at your local record store's going out of business sale or Ebay.
Why aren't any compilations listed in the Underground Discography?
The vast majority of compilations suck because labels see them as marketing tools. I've got better things to do with my time.
Why isn't [fill in a zine name] posted here?
That zine didn't want to be included or didn't reply to me. Do it yourself!
Why don't you have entire zines posted as one big file?
Years ago, I did and it caused the site to go down when many people were downloading those huge files at the same time. My web host technically provides unlimited bandwidth, but it's not unlimited bandwidth at every second of the day - they aren't going to give me the same bandwidth as Ebay for a couple hundred dollars a year. That would cost thousands of dollars each month. To fix it, I've divided the zines into smaller parts, so you can find things faster and more people can use the site.
